Spring
Mixer Set for May 12
At Coffee Mill Golf & CC

The MGCSA Spring Mixer annually is an event where Assistant Superintendents get together, but, as always, all members are encouraged to attend our opening event at Coffee Mill Golf & Country Club on Monday, May 12. Coffee Mill G&CC, located in Wabasha, was originally designed by golf course architect Glen Baldwin as a nine hole course in 1966. A second nine was added in 2004 and now stands as a Par 71.

Located on Top of the Mississippi River Bluffs

The picturesque course is located on top of the Mississippi River bluffs offering great views and many interesting changes in elevation.

The front nine features smaller, flatter, push-up style greens while the back nine has larger USGA spec greens.

Similar to many of today's golf courses, increasing turf demands on shrinking budgets and aging equipment are making golf course management a challenge.

In 1966 the clubhouse was a mushroom-shaped structure and is located near No. 5 tee. The structure is used today as a private home, rebuilt after the new clubhouse was completed.

The back nine and new clubhouse were completed in 2004 on property east of the existing nine.

If your schedule permits, you may play more than one day.

Eligibility: Entries are open to all golfers. All entries are subject to approval or rejection by the MGCSA Tournament Committee. Changes, Withdrawals and Refunds: Changes in the foursome can be made at any time before the playing date. The MGCSA Tournament Committee should be notified of the change immediately so the proper communications can be relayed to the respective host course. A $25 service charge will be deducted from all refunds.

MGCSA Hospitality Night Attracts 152 Members
To the Tommy Bahama Tropical Cafe in Orlando

The Minnesota GCSA Hospitality Night at the Golf Industry Show in Orlando, Florida was a huge
success as 152 members took advantage of the opportunity to meet with peers in a relaxed setting away from the golf course. The event took place at the Tommy Bahama Tropical Cafe on Thursday, January 31. The MGCSA members thank the 22 companies for their generous financial contributions towards this great annual event.

Roger Kisch Receives Distinguished
Service Award At Recognition Banquet

Roger Kisch, left, was this year's
recipient of the MGCSA Distinguished
Service Award for his many year's of
service to the turf industry.

Pictured on the right with Roger is Bill Larson.

Also recognized at the banquet were
MGCSA Service Award winners. 45-year
member, James Lindblad flew in from the
desert to accept his award.

Others living a bit closer found the roads
difficult to navigate as a severe snow storm
hit the Twin Cities during rush hour on the day

of the banquet and only 73 of the expected 117 attendees were able to make it to Prestwick.

James Lindblad, upper left, is pictured with 51-year
member Bill Johnson and Ron Bloom, Fairways, Inc.,
who received his 40-year service award at the
banquet.

Pictured above right, on the left, is 2007
Watson Award winner Randy Witt, CGCS,
Courses Manager at Hong Kong Country Club,

Joe Moris. The Watson Award is given
annually to a member of the
MGCSA for writing contributions
to Hole Notes, the official publication
of the Minnesota Golf Course Superintendents'
Association.

Johnson Wins MGCSA Championship Over Brown
In a Scorecard Playoff at Hillcrest GC of St. Paul

David L. Johnson, below, Rich Spring Golf Course, won a scorecard playoff over Brian Brown, Chisago Lakes Golf Course. Johnson had a consistent round with one birdie and four bogeys to shoot a 75. Brown began his round with three straight bogeys but settled down and had three birdies in the next nine holes. Brown had another string of bogeys to finish with his 75. Three-time champ Jeff Pint, New Prague Golf Course, and 2005 champ Dennis Perreault, Pheasant Acres Golf Club, tied for third with 77s.

The MGCSA extends thanks and appreciation to Hillcrest Golf Club of St. Paul for hosting our Championship on August 28. The support from the club and great condition of the course made for a great day to enjoy golf.

As the field prepared to play, Mother Nature timely sounded the shotgun horn with some thunder but the rain held off for about 16 holes.

Darren Gilgen, Eau Claire G&CC, won the First Flight with a net 62. Eric Ritter, Spooner Golf Club, shot a net 67 to finish in second place. Third place honors went to Chad Belland, Oneka Ridge Golf Course, who fired a net 69.

Greg Paulus, The Ponds at Battle Creek, is this year’s Senior champion. Paulus shot a net 67. Last year’s Champion Jim O’Neill, CycleWorks of Minnesota, shot a net 68.

Winning the Callaway Flight was Richard Carr, Interlachen Country Club. Carr shot a net 66. Jeff Whitehurst, Twin City Hydro Seeding, finished second with a net 71.

Our 2007 Long Drive Champion is Jeff Pint. Jamie Olsen, Lesco, sank the longest putt of the day on number 18. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Wally Freier, The Finley Group; Chad Belland, John Steiner, CGCS, White Bear Yacht Club, and Brett Wenzel, Keller Golf Course.

Host Superintendent Thomas Schmidt, assistant Justin Kramer and the Hillcrest Golf Club of St. Paul grounds staff presented the course in mint condition. RESULTS
